AgeSong University, occupies a historic site that has served the evolving the needs of San Francisco’s elders since 1884. Set in the city’s peaceful Portola District, the original property was established with a generous bequest from land magnate James Lick as charitable home for senior women.

A Beautifully Renovated Community in Classic Georgian Revival Building

The present residence, a handsome 1932 Georgian Revival building, was designed by civic architect Martin Rist. The two-story brick manse is flanked by two large residential wings and a wide circular drive offers easy access to the stately, white columned entry. The site also features lush gardens and a private backyard.

The Heart of AgeSong University is Where it all Happens

The spacious living room serves as the heart of AgeSong University. Set with a beamed ceiling, fireplace and grand piano, it offers an inviting place for residents and guests to gather. The living room also forms the focal point of our residents’ extensive enrichment program, with activities that range from chair yoga and flower arranging to our daily morning meditation.

Dining with a Garden View

The large dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows that fill it with light and offer a view of the surrounding gardens. A tall pitched ceiling, fireplace and farm-style accents create a cheery setting for residents to engage over meals; the bright adjacent sun room adds to the airy feel.

Newly Renovated Rooms Filled with Light

Similar to all AgeSong properties, the majority of our residents live in rooms comfortably designed for two. These shared accommodations encourage the connection and sense of family that lies at the core of AgeSong Living. The rooms are newly renovated with natural materials throughout; large windows bathe the rooms with light, and many have en suite facilities. A small number of single accommodations are also available.

The Chapel for Meditative Gatherings and Non-Denominational Services

The chapel is unique to AgeSong University. This large, simple room with its wood beamed ceiling offers a serene setting for our non-denominational services and other meditative gatherings.

Secure Gardens for a Personal Connection to Nature

The backyard and gardens feature benches, raised planters and accessible walking paths, all securely enclosed with a fence and locking gate. The lushly landscaped grounds offer a lovely place for daily assisted nature walks and community barbecues, and a gardening club will soon join our regular activities. Frequent outings to nearby McLaren Park, with its scenic meadows and beautiful lake, bring our residents the joys of nature in an expansive setting.

Multifaceted Eldercare with a Focus on Engagement and Community

Similar to all AgeSong communities, AgeSong University offers a multifaceted approach to eldercare, in an environment that creates lively engagement and a sense of home. AgeSong’s team of skilled clinicians, care partners, interns and volunteers offer the elders encouragement and support through levels of care specifically tailored to each resident’s unique needs. AgeSong Living honors and continues to add to the rich lives of our elders, and gives them encouragement, support and the freedom to be precisely who they are.

“I wanted to tell you how grateful we, the JFKU team, and our guests from Japan, were to be able to visit your beautiful facilities and to have such an inspiring presentation. Our guests have visited many other senior care facilities in U.S. in the past, but they were very impressed by your unique approach in the elderly care field, with deep psychological understanding of the elders and also of our modern society in general.

                                                                                                       —Yayoi, JFKU

“I appreciate so much what you did for my mom and me. I saw her today, and I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is safe, content, and feels valued.”

                                                                           — Regina, Family Member
