San Francisco Planning & Urban Research Association Symposium
A 2009 American Association of Retired People survey found that 89 percent of persons age 50 and older want to remain in their communities. But not all communities are built to accommodate “aging in place.” What policies are in place to ensure affordable housing and transportation options for seniors? How does successful aging play out in the city vs. a suburb?
Join us for this panel discussion featuring Joyce Polhamus of Smith Group, Byron Kuth of Kuth Ranieri Architects, James Canton of Global Futures and Nader Shabahangi from Agesong. Moderated by Kenneth Caldwell.

It commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, an open act of rebellion against the monarchy that is considered a turning point of the French Revolution. Why do we age and what for? Of what are we afraid when we think about aging? How did it happen that we humans came to treat today's elderly in such a disrespectful fashion? How would we like to be seen when we are old? This discussion is an invitation to look at aging and old age differently, to question our common cultural and personal assumptions about aging and old age. We invite you to meet with the many images of aging and look anew for meaning in aging and old age, for the maturity and wisdom the Old Wise Guide, inside of us all, offers us.

We, the authors of this book, want to explore the possibilities of forgetfulness as we age. We believe such a journey will ultimately yield an open horizon of meaning that has yet to be perceived in our society. This book wants to create a positive cultural space for people who have dementia and for those who accompany them on their journey. It is a book that we hope will alleviate much of the anxiety surrounding this phenomenon.

Conversation with Nader: A discussion about the dream behind Agesong and Bayside Park. The idea is about creating a new world, an eldertopia, where all age-groups are equally accepted and respected as important members of our society. What if we saw eldership as the period that represents the peak experience, the very moments we have been preparing for all of our lives - like the fruit that is best when it is most ripe....
