"Dr. Nader Shabahangi: Poetics of Aging"

SF State Downtown Campus, 835 Market St., Rooms 609, San Francisco
OLLI Lecture Series
We talk about the prime of life. What is that? When is that? We continue to mature and develop, especially emotionally and spiritually, until we die. Imagine if we could not wait to get old, like a child can't wait to be an adult? Imagine if we looked at each day as another opportunity to deepen, mature, grow, develop, and become an elder? How stunningly shortsighted, then, to view aging as decline! Aging allows us to keep writing the poem we call our life.

Free to OLLI members, $5 or sliding scale for nonmembers, no one turned away for lack of funds.
Reservations not required.

"Revocable Living Trusts & Durable Power of Attorney for Property/Finances"

AgeSong at Lake Merritt, 1800 Madison Street, Oakland 94612
A Revocable or Living Trust is the most common form of trust. It is called revocable because the trustor, the person who creates the trust, may revoke it at any time while still living and has legal capacity. Like a will, a trust provides for an orderly distribution of a person’s assets upon death. The immediate benefits of a trust are the time and expenses saved by not having to go through Probate, a court-controlled, orderly series of steps which must take place if one dies with or without a Will.

A Durable Power of Attorney For Property/Finances will ensure that, should you become incapacitated whether for a short term or progressively until death, someone you trust will have the authority to: transact or terminate your business; make sure you can stay in your house or rent it out for you, or sell it, as needed; pay your bills, collect your pension and/or Social Security, monitor your IRA, make “gifts” to your children, arrange your insurances, pay your taxes, monitor your Medicare, apply for Medi-Cal, etc.

Helene V. Wenzel has an estate planning practice which includes the preparation of wills, living trusts and durable powers of attorney; conservatorships; probate; and ElderWorks: planning for incapacity, long-term and Nursing Home care and Medi-Cal eligibility. She has presented programs about wills, trusts, health and financial powers of attorney at senior residences throughout the Bay Area, including Age Song in San Francisco and Oakland. Helene is past-President of the Northern California chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).

"Rhoda Curtis in Conversation"

AgeSong Lake Merritt, 1800 Madison St., Oakland, CA 94612
Rhoda Curtis is a legend, a role model, and, most of all, an inspiration to the millions of us who hope for such a rich and engaged life in our third phase of life. She continues to live fully, at the age of 93. The two books she wrote, “Rhoda: The First Ninety Years” and “After Ninety, What?” over the last ten years are a moving testament to the human spirit - a spirit that does not age but deepens, grows, and matures until transitioning to other worlds, whatever those worlds might be. Rhoda is a shining counter-example to the anti-aging sentiment in this, and, many other countries. She will make you proud to be a human being and she will fill you with anticipation of growing more mature and wise with age.

Meet Rhoda Curtis and Nader Shabahangi in a conversation about why we all should look at our later years as fulfilling, deep, and, indeed, beautiful years of our lives – years we can look forward to with much anticipation and joy.

"Advance Health Care Directives"

AgeSong at Lake Merritt, 1800 Madison Street, Oakland
An Advance Directive For Health Care will ensure that all of your health care needs and desires, including your wishes for “heroic” medical measures or none at all (DNR), are carried out and monitored by someone you trust when you can not or no longer make those decisions or communicate them to health care providers. You may limit or expand the basic authorities given your health care agent to include contracting with and paying for alternate therapies, and controlling who is allowed to visit you.

(Caveat: this agent does NOT have the authority to access your money to pay for these; only the agent for the above DPAP/F has those powers).

At this session, Attorney Wenzel will talk about the need for an Advance Health Care Directive; proper California forms will be available for attendees to fill out. Notary services will be supplied free of charge. You must have a valid, current identification card: drivers’ license; senior ID card; or current passport.

Helene V. Wenzel has an estate planning practice which includes the preparation of wills, living trusts and durable powers of attorney; conservatorships; probate; and ElderWorks: planning for incapacity, long-term and Nursing Home care and Medi-Cal eligibility. A lecture series presented by Saskia Kleinert outlining simple steps to disease prevention, and healthy aging.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the U.S. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is typically a slow-growing disease, tends to begin in men who are over age 50. Significant recent evidence suggests that lifestyle choices such as nutrition, physical activity and stress may play a pathogenetic role and affect the outcome of those diagnosed with PC.

About the Speaker:
Saskia Kleinert is a nutritionist and health educator who has been in private practice since 1989. She received her nutritional education from Hawthorn University and through courses from Dr. Andrew Weil’s Institute of Integrative Medicine. Her approach to health care and nutrition is both holistic and science-based.

A One And A Half Day Workshop
Friday May 20, 2011, 5pm - 9pm

During the introductory evening, we will explore the impact of aging on the individual, family, community and society at large. Based on this understanding, we will discuss why most of us find it challenging to communicate effectively about aging related concerns and decisions. Finally, we will offer helpful tools to facilitate communications during controversial and highly emotional discussions with elders and to support collaborative decisions that address the needs of everyone involved.

Participants in the hands-on training will have extensive opportunity to practice these tools in role plays and learn how to apply empathic listening and conflict resolution skills during interactions with elders in their daily lives.

Reduced fees for seniors (60+), students and members of sponsoring organizations, and early registrations received by May 1st. CEUs for LCSW’s & MFT’s offered through Pacific Institute: Friday only 3 CEU’s $10; full orkshops 11 CEU’s $25. Register by May 15th!

AgeSong at Laguna Grove, 624 Laguna Street San Francisco, CA 94102

As we age and mature, the big questions of life take on more centrality. Why live? What is this life, my life, for? How do I want to spend my remaining years? As humans we continually evaluate our direction and purpose in life, especially when we become more aware of our mortality, that life is not endless but precious. We begin to realize that we need to make choices and that the world makes decisions for us. The ancient text by Lao-tzu, the Tao Te Ching, has been used for over 2500 years as a guide and solace for us humans struggling for meaning and sense of this life.
